What Is Bone Broth? (And What It Isn't)

Bone broth is one of those foods that almost everyone has heard of, but not everyone really understands.

Some people think it's a health trend. Others assume it's just stock with a different name. Some see it as a supplement, while others think of it as something you only make when you're sick.

The truth is much simpler.

Bone broth is made by gently cooking bones, meat and connective tissue with water, vegetables and herbs. As these ingredients cook together, they create a rich, savoury broth with a full-bodied texture, naturally occurring protein and a depth of flavour that's difficult to achieve any other way.

You can enjoy it on its own or use it anywhere you'd normally reach for stock or water while cooking.

But before we go any further, it's just as helpful to understand what bone broth isn't.

It Isn't a Shortcut

Good bone broth doesn't happen in a hurry.

Every decision matters; from the quality of the ingredients to the way the broth is prepared. Time plays its part, but so do care, attention and knowing when the broth has reached the right balance of flavour and body.

It Isn't a Miracle Food

Bone broth is often surrounded by big promises.

That's not how we think about it.

We don't believe bone broth is a cure or a magic solution. We see it as real food made from honest ingredients that fits naturally into a balanced way of eating.

Good nutrition isn't built from one superfood. It's built from the foods we choose consistently.

Bone broth is simply one of those foods.

It Isn't Just for Soup

Most people think of bone broth as something you use in soup.

But it's far more versatile than that.

Sip it warm in the morning or between meals. Cook your rice with it. Add it to curries, stews, gravies, sauces or noodles. Use it anywhere you'd normally use water or stock and want to add more depth of flavour.

Once you start cooking with bone broth, you'll probably find yourself reaching for it more often than you expected.

So, Where Does Bone Broth Fit In?

Bone broth isn't something that needs to be saved for special occasions or when you're feeling under the weather.

It's a versatile kitchen staple that brings flavour, naturally occurring protein and nourishment to everyday meals. Whether you're sipping it from a mug or using it to build a better curry, soup or sauce, it's simply another way to make good food even better.

How bone broth is made, however, makes a difference. We'll share more about how we make ours in the next post.
